There are three road routes to Kunene River Lodge.
During our Rainy season from December until April, it is not advise to use the D3700 as the Rivers might be flowing and this makes the Road not useable. Please contact the Lodge directly to enquire about the Road conditions during those Months.
The 96km riverside road from Epupa Falls to Kunene River Lodge has recently been upgraded. This is scenic route by the river and the Zebra mountains. Whilst 4×4 is not necessary in dry conditions, a high clearance vehicle is recommended.
Kunene River – Ruacana Area D3700, North-west Kunene, Namibia
From the South via Opuwo
From Kamanjab take the tarred C35 to Opuwo (approx. 250kms). From Opuwo take C41 for 135kms (about 2.5kms) to Kunene River Lodge along the D3700 go Epembe and D3701 to Swartbooisdrift – both good, gravel roads, normally passable. High clearance vehicle is recommended.
From the South or West via Epupa and/or Epembe
You can choose to take the easy scenic route.
Take the D3700 gravel road from Epupa Falls to Epembe, then the D3701 from Epembe to Swartbooisdrift before reaching Kunene River Lodge, totalling 165 km (driving time 3-4 hours).
Both roads are graded regularly.
NOTE: The 96km riverside road from Epupa Falls to Kunene River Lodge has recently been upgraded. This is scenic route by the river and the Zebra mountains. Whilst 4×4 is not necessary in dry conditions, a high clearance vehicle is recommended.
From the East via Ruacana
Ruacana is reachable by tarred roads from the east via B1/C46 and also from the south via the C35.
Just 15kms west of Ruacana (D3701) the road becomes gravel for 45kms to Kunene River Lodge.
NOTE: This road is generally fine in the dry season, but if the river floods, the diversions demand 4 wheel drive.
