Kunene River Lodge - A Brief History

In 1994, an enterprising individual fulfilled his dream by building a private weekend retreat beside the Kunene River, in one of Namibia's most remote regions. Soon, he began opening his gate to weary passing travellers seeking somewhere to stay overnight, and by 1995 this ad-hoc arrangement had become a commercial enterprise with the addition of basic amenities, an ablution block, a tented camp and that most essential of assets - a bar!

The White-Water Activity Centre opened in 1997 and, as an integral part of the Lodge, developed its operations along one of the finest stretches of white-water in southern Africa, offering outstanding, safe rafting adventures for novice and expert alike.

In 2005, Pete and Hillary Morgan purchased the Lodge after falling in love with it while on holiday there. Their continuous programme of re-furbishment and upgrading has transformed the Lodge and its reputation, bringing it into line with the finest Tourist Lodges in remote Namibia and with the expectations of today's most adventurous Tourists, yet still providing the comfort, amenities and peace demanded by those escaping the pressures of day-to-day urban life.

Pete and Hillary have also developed a close working partnership with the local Himba people, since Kunene River Lodge is the only tourist destination within the recently formed Kunene Conservancy. This relationship facilitates our organised trips to visit a local kraal or homestead to glimpse the simple, timeless lifestyle of these remarkable people who belong to one of the last African tribes to maintain a nomadic lifestyle.
